Paper Lens for Android · One person, one address

There is no ticket system and no help desk. There is an email address, and it is read by the person who wrote the code — which is slower than a call centre and considerably more likely to end in the bug being fixed.

Expect a reply within a few days. If something is badly broken — data lost, the app will not start — say so in the subject line and it goes to the front.

Reporting a bug

Four things turn "it does not work" into something fixable on the first attempt. If you have them to hand, include them:

  1. Your phone and Android version — for example "Samsung SM-E076B, Android 16". Settings → About phone.
  2. The Paper Lens version — Settings, at the bottom of the screen.
  3. What you did, in order. "I imported three photos, pressed Done, then rotated the phone" is worth more than any description of the result.
  4. What happened, and what you expected instead.

A screenshot or a screen recording helps and is usually safe to send. Please do not attach a scanned document unless I have asked for one and you are happy for me to see it — almost every bug can be found without it.

Accessibility problems come first

If something cannot be reached with TalkBack, cannot be read at your text size, or cannot be operated without a precise drag, that is a defect and not a limitation. Report it the same way and it will be treated as one.

Questions

Where are my scans stored?

In the folder you chose when you first ran the app, as ordinary JPEG files with a plain text description beside them. You can open them with any file manager or gallery. If you chose storage private to the app instead, they are visible only to Paper Lens — you can switch between the two in Settings at any time, and switching moves your existing scans across rather than leaving them behind.

Does it need an internet connection?

No, and it could not use one if it wanted to. Paper Lens does not declare Android's internet permission, so it is incapable of opening a network connection. Every feature, including reading the text on your pages, works in airplane mode.

Are my documents uploaded or used to train anything?

No. Nothing leaves your phone. The text recognition runs on the device using a model that ships inside the app, and there is no server to send anything to. The privacy policy says this at length.

What happens to my scans if I uninstall the app?

If your scans are in a folder you chose, they stay exactly where they are and remain readable without Paper Lens. If you chose storage private to the app, Android deletes them along with the app — that is the trade-off for other apps not being able to read them, and it is stated in Settings where you make the choice.

I cleared the app's data, or moved to a new phone. Can I get my library back?

Yes, in two ways. Point the app at the same folder again and it will read your scans back with their titles, page order and crops — the folder holds everything needed to rebuild the library. Or, if you made a backup, restore the zip file from Settings.

Why did it not detect the edges of my page?

Usually contrast or light. A white page on a white table has no edge to find, and a dark room makes every frame noisy. Try a surface a different shade from the page, and more light. Detection failing is not a dead end: switch to manual capture, take the photograph yourself, and drag the four corners where they belong on the next screen.

Can I get my documents out?

They were never locked in. Export a PDF or image files from any scan, back the whole library up to a single zip, or simply copy the folder to a computer — the files in it are standard JPEGs and readable by anything.

Is there an account, and does it cost anything?

There is no account and nothing to sign in to. Paper Lens is free, with no advertising, no subscription and no feature withheld behind one.

Is there an iPhone version?

No, and none is planned. The app is written against Android's own APIs rather than a cross-platform layer, which is part of why it behaves the way it does. A second platform would be a second app, not a rebuild flag.

Can I test it before it is released?

Testing is currently a small closed group. If you want to be part of the next round, say so in an email and mention the phone you would be testing on — a device that is not already covered is genuinely useful.
